Apple’s new iPod: Lying in wait?
By Triston McIntyre
With all the hype surrounding the iPhone, all talks have been virtually silenced regarding an updated or revamped iPod. However, ThinkSecret claims to have received a tip that Apple is secretly developing the new 6G iPod which could debut the same time as the iPhone.
Though the original anonymous tipper claimed the new iPod would be released tomorrow (a bit of a stretch, considering how quickly word travels throughout the Apple community), word on the street is no such debut will hit the newswaves…yet.
It is quite plausible that Apple has completed their next generation of iPods; the touch screen technology now being toted in the iPhone will most likely make an appearance in a plain ole’ iPod sometime in the very near future; frankly, slap that touch screen on the current size of iPod, make a few OS switches, and you have your much-coveted widescreen touch-sensitive iPod.
On the flip side, it seems doubtful that Apple will really do anything to distract their current flock of iPhone worshipers from their obsession; I think we can count on hearing zilch until June.
Realistically Apple will stagger the release of the new iPod a season after the iPhone’s release. Why release fall of ‘07?
1. A fall release will allow the hype surrounding the iPhone to climax as the new tool hits the market; adopters will have plenty of time to lust and indulge before considering a new iPod.
2. A fall release will leave enough time for the old iPods to be phased out prior to the Christmas season, so new iPods will be “in.” (Consider this: Apple may have a stranglehold on the Christmas tech scene with a new iPod and iPhone…those who aren’t interested in the phone side of the iPhone can get their touch-screeniness)
I would be willing to bet my pennies (and they are few, so don’t even bother accepting) that the next iPod is sitting cozily in a few gargantuan warehouses, just waiting for their bigger iPhone brother to hit the scene. Ok, well maybe just a few completed production models. However, the changes to the iPod won’t be any more revolutionary than what’s coming packed in the iPhone, so you can hold your breath as we await the next iPod.
Note: the image above is a great artistic rendition of a touchscreen iPod taken from The Big Picture, not an actual touchscreen iPod ad (as if).

“I would be willing to bet … that the next iPod is sitting cozily in a few gargantuan warehouses.”
I’ll take that bet. Apple almost went out of business because it was carrying too much obsolete inventory. Apple doesn’t do that anymore.

It’s possible that Apple could release the new iPod at the same time as the iPhone. If recent surveys are correct, Apple won’t be able to meet initial demand for the iPhone. Rather than loosing business because they don’t have enough iPhones to sell immediately, they may make the (easier to produce) new iPods available at the same time, so that they can sell these to people who prefer not to wait for a bigger supply of iPhones.

Very interesting point, Harvey; I think that’s what I was trying to get at but my brain couldn’t get that out on the paper
Thanks for the comment, I think its very plausible.

I am honestly kind of annoyed with the iPhone. Don’t get me wrong; it’s a great product with a lot of amazing features, and I want one VERY badly. But the plain and simple fact is that I can’t get one. I have Sprint, and unfortunately renewed a new 2 year contract this past December before news of the iPhone was out. So what I really want is a new iPod in the same format as the iPhone. What’s annoying is that Apple has been ignoring millions of people like me who can’t go buy an iPhone the minute it is released.

I honestly think that if apple wants to make a smart move than it will release the Ipod at least 6 months after the release of the Iphone, which already happened. It will mean that apple gets more people to ta buy it. If it isn’t than I’ll satisfy myself with a rget even those with the new iphones (but which retard would do that) and it will be around Christmas time. So you know apple will be hitting big. But all I hope is that the new Ipod doesn’t cost 5 or 6 hundreds like the Iphone. If the ipod is within 300 to 350 I will satisfy myslef with the current 5.5 gen Ipod.
