MacBook, MacBook Pro to sport Santa Rosa upgrades Tuesday

By Triston McIntyre

MacBook, MacBook Pro to sport Santa Rosa upgrades TuesdayAfter being on the market for a good while, Apple’s Core 2 Duo laptop models are well due for a little spit shine (or just an upgrade). What better to include in the much-appreciated upgrades than Intel’s latest and greatest mobile processor, Santa Rosa?

Think Secret has reported that although most knew both MacBook lines would be due for an upgrade within the next month or so, they have received reports that upgrades could come as early as Tuesday morning, some say.

Santa Rosa has quite a few improvements over the basic Core 2 Duo processor, including speeds from 1.8 to 2.4 GHz, and even the Intel GMA 3000 GPU, which will substantially raise the performance of the MacBook graphics.

Also included in the Santa Rosa processors are enhanced wireless networking capabilities and more security features (no, not Vista-esque..not all security features are bad).

Though some rumors are unsubstantiated, this one seems to have some merit: supplies of low-end Apple notebooks at major retailers are very low, and Apple has discontinued notebook shipments to its stores.

Also expected following Steve’s “going green” letter were updates to the notebooks’ screens, with a switch to LED-based displays. Unfortunately those sources believe the switch to LED is not in preparation at this point…not surprising considering the whole “green” movement at Apple has just recently come about.

Nonetheless, a Santa Rosa upgrade is very exciting; so exciting I’m a bit downcast that I purchased my MacBook prior to the upgrade. The best and worst thing about being an Apple fanatic is that there is always something new on the horizon, and you must learn to deal with all the new gadgetry you simply can’t afford (unless you’re Gates…I don’t doubt in his private quarters he has an 8-core Mac Pro on 2 30″ Cinema displays, and I’m sure he writes frequent emails to Steve requesting a pre-release iPhone.).

[...] That being said, I don’t know what can account for this, it simply is the wrong time to buy a new Mac, especially a laptop. With the new LED display technology due to appear on the MacBook and MacBook Pro line not to mention the inclusion of Intel’s “Santa Rosa” aka Centrino Pro platform on the laptops, why are people buying?
