Apple delivers weak booster to MacBook line; no Santa Rosa for you!
By Triston McIntyre
As with many Mac and Apple rumors, only a part of the recent buzz was correct; though talks of both performance improvements and an upgrade to Intel’s new Santa Rosa mobile chipset were rumored, the Apple store recently went down and came back with a refreshed line of MacBooks, but Santa Rosa didn’t make the cut.
The new MacBook line specs are as follows:
- 2.0 or 2.16 GHz for white MacBooks, 2.16 GHz standard for the black sheep.
- 80, 120, or 160 Gb standard hard drives, with upgrades available up to 200 Gb.
- 1 Gb standard memory for all models, with the previous upgrades to 3 Gb still available.
There you have it; really a bit disappointing, considering the jump in speed is negligible. However, if you were waiting to pick up a MacBook for some reason (other than LED displays and Santa Rosa), you can get what you needed (i.e the minimal 80 Gb storage or 1 Gb memory) for a slightly cheaper price than before.
Let me offer a couple friendly words of advice: first, let me say that there really is no “good” time to buy your Mac, because Apple loves releasing small updates like this all the time, so if you’re going to stress out when your new MacBook is outdated, start scheduling appointments with your shrink. Secondly, if you were waiting for a good upgrade that really differentiates old MacBooks from new ones…this isn’t it. There’s still a good chance MacBooks will see an updated chipset (even if it isn’t Santa Rosa) in the very near future, and Apple has already promised to deliver LED-equipped MacBooks that will do wonders for your battery life.
Wait a bit longer if you can. After all, with Leopard, LEDs, and Santa Rosa still on the very near horizon, the only place to go from here is up.
