Top Apple rumors that didn’t happen
By Jonathan Schlaffer
Apple rumors aren’t anything new and a number of sites like to grow and nourish them until everyone realizes that it can’t be true and nothing happens at a Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) or MacWorld. We’ve all heard our fare share of Apple rumors…which ones top your list?
The Apple Blog thinks it has the answer with the top 10 Apple Rumors that never happened, and is it ever the list! Looking back, the whole thing is ridiculous, but did we think so at the time? Probably not.
Apple to acquire Disney - while this didn’t happen in so many words, Steve Jobs is a majority shareholder of Disney, but that doesn’t mean Apple OWNS Disney…it just means that Disney can be molded to fit the Apple model.
Apple Plasma TVs - enough said. Insanity, I say.
iPods loaded with songs - well, you can get them on eBay but not from the Apple Store.
Apple to buy Universal Music- uh huh, in your dreams, maybe.
Justin Long, aka “the Mac” in the Mac vs. PC ads, to retire - well, we still have the Mac vs. PC ads; in fact, not too long ago three new ones were released. Where did this start, I wonder? Now all we need is a Mac vs. PC TV show, oh wait, someone is doing that already.
Apple PDA - designers at Apple had their chance with the Newton and failed… “natural handwriting recognition” turned into “nature hunting reconnaissance” and from what I’ve read, it was that bad. I was around when the Newton originally sold but not old enough to understand its implications.
Tablet Mac - if you can do it yourself (DIY) then you can create a Tablet Mac. There may someday be a Tablet Mac but not today, the closest any of us may get is the new sub-laptop/notebook thing Apple is supposedly making that will sport NAND flash memory (instead of a traditional hard drive) and no optical drive and yes, that too is a rumor.
Media Center OSX or DVR - did not really come to the market in either form…instead we got the iTV, which is a similar concept so I’m counting this one as true.
$100 Mini iPods, with stripes! - You can get an iPod in several colors without the stripes. Price for the 2GB Nano is only $120 so it’s not far off, but if you want more colors, the 4GB or 8GB version is required and costs as much as $250. Well, it’s a start; half true.
Piles in OSX - well I don’t know what Piles is but apparently it didn’t make the cut.
Rumors spread like wildfire and these were no exception, what with all the top-rated websites passing along the rumors as real news. I doubt it will end any time soon.

“Piles in OS X” sounds more like someone taking the mickey. I’d count that rumour as being true, given the effects that the perenially-constipated Finder performance can have on your bowel movement.
