Apple faces class-action lawsuit for MacBook displays

Apple faces class-action lawsuit for MacBook displaysI was wondering how long it would take for someone (besides myself, who is without the necessary resources) to bring a lawsuit against Apple for their shoddy MacBook displays. Finally, some owners based in San Diego are bringing a class-action lawsuit against the technology giant for deceptive advertising in regards to the MacBook display capabilities.

The MacBook is supposed to be able to display “millions of colors,” when in effect additional software for “dithering” is required to do so. That seems quite cut and dry to my senses.

Those bringing the suit are seeking a jury-trial to mediate the case, and are seeking unspecified damages; unfortunately for Apple, class-action suits generally tend to be on the higher end in damages, being that all Apple MacBook owners have been so mislead.

One thing that really does disappoint me with Apple’s handlings of delicate situations is their responses to complaints; in this particular situation, Apple responded to the customer complaints by retorting that the technical glitches were “imagined by the owners,” according to AHN.

Ah, Apple. If there is one thing I can recommend in regards to customer relations (and this is widely-established in the service industries, so pay close attention), the customer is always right. Even if they aren’t, your best bet isn’t emphatically holding your ground that the customers are just imagining things…customers might be tempted to get angry.

I know I keep coming back to this, but this isn’t the only problem related to MacBook displays; Apple has similarly responded to many complaints that MacBook displays develop bad flickering problems, as seen in this widely-visted Apple forum. Not unlike the responses to this current law-suit bringing group, many users were told by Mac Geniuses that they were unaware of the problem, or even that it was the misperception of the users (if the problem didn’t show up whilest in the Mac store).

All I can say is I really hope Apple is forced to recall the current line of MacBooks and replace them with something (perhaps an LED display?) that functions correctly and as-advertised. I don’t particularly care how the results come about, so three cheers for sue-happy Californians!

Apple is just doing what the rest of the industry is doing. 6-bit displays are the standard in the LCD arena. Especially in laptops. 8-bit displays would be to expensive and too slow. They all advertise their 6-bit as “Millions of colors”. Apple is just a high profile target to take your potshot at.

Craig, good point. However, just because everyone does it (in regards to false advertising) doesn’t mean everyone can get away with it. They’re all “high-profile,” and yes Apple is just as good as any other for taking potshots at. Luckily, they have a buck or two to spare (they could always auction off steve’s jet).

Bitter, table of two. Hun, if its so horrible for you why not go back to amber screens, or how about simple pencil and paper. It does wonders for your carpel tunnel syndrom.

WHAT THE HECK!!?!?! My 13″ MacBook display works just fine?!!? A recall would be a disaster! The only time I would send in my Mac for a recall is if thy were gonna replace it with a Multi-Touch Display :-) Oh, and by the way, MACBOOKS DO MILLIONS OF COLORS!!!

  5. Triston McIntyre:

    Curt,

I’m very happy for you. If they do a recall (which could happen, being that the MacBooks have been proven to not do millions of colors out of the box), don’t send yours in if you’re happy with it! I have problems with mine, but if you don’t, most definitely don’t send it back!

Macbooks LCD screen is same as other manufacturers. There might be a flaw in the dithering algorithm which prevents it from going to millions of colours from thousands of colours.

Is the same problem being reported with the Mac Book Pro?

    Haji,
I believe this is a macbook only problem…not related to the MBP
