Apple TV reaches 160 Gb, prepares for HD

By Triston McIntyre

Apple TV reaches 160 Gb, prepares for HDI know this was in a flurry of other Apple news and I didn’t have a chance to announce it, but Apple TV got a serious kick in the pants; previously holding only 40Gb of content, it can now be purchased with a 160 Gb hard drive, a serious step up from its previous place.  Now the Apple Tv is something not only worth buying, but also considering for the next step to HD streaming.

Interestingly enough, the 40Gb version still costs $299, where the 160 Gb will only run $399…if you’re seriously interested in using this thing for any long period of time, break down and spend another $100 for 120Gb.  It’s a steal in comparison.

You might think Apple should include some sort of in between model of 80 Gb or something; however, the large jump in capacity is probably foreshadowing for Apple’s (sometime) release of HD content to iTunes.  Steve Jobs hinted at this during the D conference, though nothing official has been announced as of yet.

As it stands, there are enough easy hacks and modifications to run just about any content from your computer to your Apple TV, no matter what format; not saying that I know about it, but there is plenty of HD content “circulating” the internet, and if you’re willing to put in the time to “acquire it,” 160 Gb should suffice in regards to storage.

Anyway, keep your eyes peeled for announcements pertaining to HD content on iTunes; although I don’t expect to see it this quarter or next (this quarter might as well be called the coming of the iPhone, and next will be Leopard-centric), we might well see it in Q4 or early next year.  Yay for HD!
