Apple unleashes “iPhone@Home” tomorrow at WWDC?

June 10, 2007

Apple unleashes Any true Apple fanatic has come to crave that little phrase so frequently used by Steve Jobs during his keynotes, “one last thing.” Well, hold on to ya butts, Apple fans: word going around the internet is that an early leak of Steve Jobs’ keynote address plan has him introducing a brand new product to the Apple lineup called iPhone@Home, that brings all the new technology of the iPhone into a multi-touch portable phone for in-home use. Could it be?

This flamebait is brought to you by DailyTechTalk, who claims to have stumbled upon a German site that had the keynote outline posted; the whole thing does appear very Jobs-esque.

The keynote begins introducing a made-over iMac in beautiful brushed metal style with Santa Rosa; Jobs talks about stores opening up globe-wide, demos Leopard, and then springs a big one (supposedly) in iPhone@Home.

The iPhone@Home (from what we can glean from the fairly succinct and dodgy outline) is a sister gadget to the iPhone, designed to pump life back into the in-home portable phone: the unit supposedly comes equipped with a 10″ multi-touch screen, 30 Gb of flash memory, a built in iSight, and even iChat…

What could this mean? Besides the breath of fresh air to the stagnant in-home telephone, this could mean Jobs aims to take the video phone to the next level: a 10″ screen and iChat could theoretically be the keys to unlocking high-quality, flaw-free video calling for the every day Joe. Undoubtedly such a device would need to be used via broadband, so we’re guessing integration with VoIP?

At first such a suggested device seems unfeasible; why create a unit for a dying breed (in-home phones) that could detract from sales from the iPhone? The beauty of such a notion is that an iPhone@Home could be a complimentary unit users could take throughout the house (like an uber-portable mini-computer) that acts as a video telephone, media streamer, calendar, etc…the type of thing you use to control everything in your day to day life, right?

Let’s sincerely hope this “leak” isn’t bogus; I would truly love to see such a device. All we can do is wait until tomorrow, so stay tuned to Mac.Blorge.com for the updates. What do you, the readers think about all this? Possible? A waste of internet space?
