WWDC Leopard peek makes Vista look like bag lady

WWDC Leopard peek makes Vista look like bag ladyToday’s WWDC kick-off keynote was bland, at best; it’s easy to expect miracles when people should expect normalities. However, the star of today’s show wasn’t the iPhone, or even Safari for Windows: it was Leopard, and the stage has officially been set for Leopard to push Vista out of the lime light and into the waste bin.

We all kind of had an idea as to what Leopard purportedly brought (or will bring) to the table; however, today we saw the beast running in the wild.

What did it look like? It looked like Spaces. It looked like Cover Flow. It looked like Stacks. It looked like networking. It looked like Quick Look. In short, it looked like operating system bliss.

Want to venture a guess what it didn’t look like? It sure as hell didn’t look like Microsoft’s “revolutionary” operating system, Windows Vista. We’ll leave discussion of that sewer filth to other avenues, but if Vista is revolutionary, Leopard is the savior of next-generation computing.

Steve brought up widgets; Leopard will bring the dashboard into a new era, where usage isn’t a nice alternative…it goes hand in hand with desktop use. What does ole’ Bill have? Some knock-off, system-intensive mimick for Vista?

There’s a great deal of irony in the way Apple has taken steps to perfect Boot Camps for Leopard, when the idea of tainting the great OS with a low-life OS is sickening, at best. I sincerely hope the opening screen for Boot Camps displays a Mac face with a distasteful expression, with a caption reading, “I guess…if you have to…”

Time Machine promises to take the security of stored files to a new dimension, allowing users to retrieve lost files (or deleted files) at any given time; how much more would you enjoy that over the blue screen of death, or weekly external backups, spy and malware updates, and crossed fingers?

If you must use Windows, use it until October. After that, be done with it, and don’t look back; after all…would you walk down the street with a bag lady, or drive around in a beat up jalopy by choice? If you wouldn’t, why on earth associate yourself with Windows?

What makes Leopard even more appealing for me is the price. Let me explain: I’ll be starting college in September and I’ll be buying a MacBook Pro, (with student discount that brings it to $1799) and they have a special offer of a free iPod Nano. While I wanted the Nano, I was thinking of letting it pass since it ends in Sept. and I didn’t want to shell out for Leopard a month later. I thought it would cost almost the same as Windows, but when I checked the software section of the online store, Tiger was $69 (with student discount). Even if Leopard is priced higher, I don’t think it’ll cost more than $100 for me, so in the end buying now and then upgrading is a very cost-effective option, something I don’t think I would ever have with Windows.

Yeah Basu, i second that, im in the UK and in the exact same situation as you, but we call it university over here, lol, any way the middle macbook with 2gb ram and the 3 year protection plan came to £868 with student discount, which is a hell of a lot cheaper than without discount, the guy said it was 15%, anyway leopard over here will be between £50-70 according to the guy on the phone when i ordered my mac, thats if tigers prices are anything to go by. so i thought what the hey ill get it now. well done apple. just hoping i havent bought too soon before they upgrade all the models.

  3. Basu:

They just upgraded their Macbook lines a while ago, I don’t think they’ll be in a hurry to upgrade again

Why not write a blog with out bashing the competition, and I can take you seriously. Once yo resort to name calling, you sound like an biased fanboy.

MS is way ahead of Apple, so you can wake up now.

  5. Jack:

I agree with you that Leopard is shaping up pretty nicely. If this is what is looks like now, I’m eager to see how far will go in October! =)

Not biased at all are you Triston? So what if you want to buy some software that does something specialised? Most people actually write software for Windows first then maybe if they are big enough they might consider porting it to the mac. For people who like to have fun, buy a mac, if you actually want to get real work done, I think Windows is possibly a better bet.

As a side note, I let my mother-in-law choose between a Macbook running Leopard and a PC running Vista. She said the PC looked nicer, was easier to use and faster. She is a complete novice…
