New iMacs, iPods hinted at in financial meeting?

New iMacs, iPods hinted at in financial meeting? In an highly uncharacteristic move for Apple, hints were dropped at a financial Q&A of ‘”some product transitions”.

Apple is notorious for not discussing products before they are ready to go, and Steve Jobs can have his accompanying media event, but someone seems to have forgotten informed CFO Peter Oppenheimer of this. Luckily, Forbes was on top of this.

Apple had a stated guidance of $.66 a share for this previous fiscal quarter, but ended up overshooting that to a record $.92 a share. Component costs were down; profits were up, so imagine everyone’s surprise when Apple announced an expected $.65 a share for the next quarter.

UBS’s Benjamin Reitzes asked why Apple was to be believed when the numbers had been so off this previous quarter. Oppenheimer gave three reasons: their expensive back-to-school product promotions, some key parts are going up in price, and there will be a “product transition I can’t get into.”

With the next iteration of OS X, Leopard, just around the corer, the idea that new iMacs are just around the corner is almost impossible to miss. The biggest surprise would be if there weren’t also new iPods just around the corner to boot.

The last iPod line refresh was announced on September 12th, 2006, it’s certainly difficult to believe Apple would go into the holiday season without a new iPod. The question remains if it will finally be the long rumored touchscreen, or will we have to wait one more generation?

One never knows where tantalizing Apple news bits will come from.
