Rumored iPod 6th gen specs actually the new Nano?
By Sean P. Aune
In the never-ending game that is iPod rumors, now it seems the previously reported on trimmed down model may actually be the next gen of Nanos, and not the big league 6th generation.
9to5mac.com is reporting that their sources in China are now saying the specs rumored last week are actually the 3rd generation of Nanos. The new Nano is now said to be more in the range of a 2″ X 2″ square with a 320X240 video screen, bringing video to the mid-range iPod line.
This leaves it up in the air as to what the top tier of iPods will be turned in to. Will this be the long hoped for “phoneless iPhone” with touchscreen video? 9to5Mac’s sources are claiming the new iPods are already in containers en route to the United States, and we can expect price points of $299 and $399 for the new models, but, again, no clue what those prices will buy you.
August 7th is the rumored street date for the new players, and there is evidence both for and against this:
For - Major online retailers have dropped prices on the existing 5.5 gen models by approximately $20.00.
Against - Steve Jobs is famous for his media events to announce new products. If the August 7th date is to be believed, it seems odd that new event has been announced yet.
As with all rumors related to Apple, nothing will be 100% confirmed until either Mr. Jobs announces it, or the products are actually on store shelves.
