One has to wonder where the new iPods are

August 7, 2007

One has to wonder where the new iPods are With mere hours separating us from the last Apple media event, one has to begin to wonder where the new iPods are hiding.

While all the new iMac, iLife, and iWorks news today was exciting, speculation is rampant amongst this site’s authors why there was no news on a new line of iPods.  This event was billed as being Mac-centric, but one kept waiting to hear those famous Steve Jobs words, “Oh, and one more thing…’, but alas, there was no joy in Mudville today, as mighty Steve has struck out.

Looking at the last line update, we have not seen new iPods since September 12th, 2006, and with the all-important holiday shopping season knocking on our doors; it’s hard to imagine not having new ones soon.  So, using September 12th as a benchmark, we began speculating on when we here at Blorge thought we might see them, our current bet is September 18th.

How do we come to this conclusion?  Well, using last year’s announcement date, plus a one day old rumor from MacRumors.com about new iPods possibly in September, it wasn’t a difficult leap.  We speculate the 18th simply because the 4th seems too soon, and it is unlikely that Mr. Jobs would announce new gadgets on a day as solemn as September 11th.  So, we look for the 18th as the most logical date.

The benefits to having a media event today and another in six weeks are two-fold: He gets to control two tech news cycles twice, and he gets to give the appearance of two separate companies within Apple.  One has to wonder if this wasn’t an indication of things to come with an Apple Computers division and an Apple Consumer Products division, but the two distinct events fits do clearly fit in with Mr. Jobs’ penchant for showmanship.

As for what the new iPods will bring us is anyone’s guess, but strong indications abound of touchschreens on the top tier line, and a move to 16GB NAND Flash for the Nanos, which may add video also.

That one who kept waiting was me, sorry to ruin the mystery but it shouldn’t have been hard to guess…

Yes, September 18th is logical but I’m no fan of logic, Steve (Jobs) if you’re out there, the sooner I have a new iPod, the better. Mine is broken and I’m not buying a new one until the models are refreshed, savvy?

(Also, I have absolutely no faith in Apple’s warranty service, AT ALL).
