Apple updates more than the iMac in latest round or reconfiguring

By Sean P. Aune

Apple updates more than the iMac in latest round Besides the introduction of the fourth generation of iMacs yesterday, Apple updated some other products, albeit with a much quieter approach.

The spotlight was squarely on the iMacs yesterday, along with the updates to iLife and iWork, but some of the quieter parts of the Apple family got some shiny new specs.

As we mentioned yesterday .Mac got several new features with a larger integration with iPhoto via the Web Gallery, but it also got an increase in storage to 10GB and increased bandwidth to 100GB.  Also not to be forgotten was the “magical” appearance of the “Send to Web Gallery” feature on the iPhones.  So .Mac subscribers got several upgrades yesterday.

The Mac Mini, which some thought would head to the Apple Graveyard to join The Cube yesterday, got some tweaking also.  The processors got a bump to Core 2 Duos running at 1.83GHz in the lower priced model and 2.0GHz in the higher end.  The standard 512MB of RAM got bumped to 1GB, hard drives went to 80GB and 120GB, better graphics cards, and a WiFi up to 802.11g.  The WiFi came as a disappointment to many as the iMacs did get a bump to 802.11n.

Even the AirPort Extreme saw a bump as it moved from 10/100 Base-T Ethernet, to full Gigabit Ethernet ports.

And last, but not least, The Mac Pro desktops got the option to add a PCI RAID Card.  This option will add a mere $999 to the price of your high end OS X powered desktop.

Many updates all around, and probably the last we will see until the rumored September 18th launch of the 6th Generation of iPods, and third generation of Nanos.
