Samsung 1.8" Hard Drive Goes to 160GB, Possible iPod Drive?

By Sean P. Aune

Samsung 1.8" Hard Drive Goes to 160GB, Possible iPod Drive? With an iPod line update coming any day now, could Samsung’s announcement of a 160GB, 1.8″ drive be a sign of things to come?

Samsung has announced that it will be releasing a 1.8″ 160GB hard drive, the same size as the top tier of iPod’s use.

With the possible release of new iPods coming any day now (MAC.BLORGE.com is predicting September 18th), and the idea that the 6th generation iPod will be the long desired full screen video version, it would make sense to see a massive upgrade to the storage capacity.

The last update to the line was September 12th, 2006, and at that time the video iPod’s only saw an update from 60GB to 80GB.  In the year since then, both Samsung and Toshiba have announced 160GB drives of the correct dimensions and specs, so it’s not difficult to think we will see a doubling of the top MP3 player’s capacity.

The Samsung press release makes a point of mentioning that a drive of this size would hold 40,000 MP3s or 100 hours of HD video.  While it is not unusual such a feature, with the impending line update, one has to wonder if it may be a hint of what we will see coming out of Apple.

And when you add this with the rumors of the iPod Nanos going to 16GB, a doubling of their current top-end capacity, one had to wonder if we will just got a doubling across the board.
