iTunes update brings changes for iPhones and hints of movie rentals
By Sean P. Aune
Never let it be said that Apple rests on their laurels when it comes to updating software, but sometimes they update it a bit too much.
As we reported earlier today, the new version of iTunes, 7.4.1, removed the glitch that allowed you to turn any song in to a ringtone for the iPhone. It seems they may have updated a bit too much though.
According to a flickr.com user named David Watanabe, he was attempting to report a glitch when he discovered something interesting:
I was trying to report a problem via iTunes, and this pop-up for selecting a reason contains some interesting/revealing strings… looks like “RentalMovies” will be coming to the iTunes store.
Sure enough, it looks like the growing media giant will be bringing rentals to market sometime soon. Back in June, the Financial Times reported that Apple was in talks with movie studios to just that, and we might see the new service sometime in the fall.
At the time, it was suspected that rentals would be $2.99 for a 30-day rental and would be able to watched on devices such as iPods and Apple TV. With the addition of the iPod Touch, more potential video coming out seems to make sense, and this new discovery certainly adds credence to that thought.
