Apple furtively withholds iCal entries from iPod Touch
By Triston McIntyre
If you thought the iPod touch was too good to be true, what with its almost indecipherable similarities to the iPhone, Apple is doing whatever it can to prove your fears correct…and they’re doing that by taking away features from the iPod touch, so you don’t forget how cool the iPhone is.
The coolest thing, arguably, about the iPod touch is how Apple chose to include Safari, YouTube, and the all-important touch keyboard with which to navigate said applications.
It followed that, as the iPod touch contains iCal and Contacts, you could use said keyboard to edit and create entries in each respective application. Until yesterday, you could. However, a few hawk-eyed readers informed Engadget of a slight change of Apple’s iPod touch page.
The first entry read:
“…web in Safari, searching for videos on YouTube, finding music on the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, entering calendar events, or adding new contacts.”
Oddly enough, a revised entry reads:
“…web in Safari, searching for videos on YouTube, finding music on the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store, or adding new contacts.”
What could possibly possess Apple to remove a piece of functionality from a full application like iCal? It is sadly simple: they’re afraid of losing potential iPhone buyers to their new iPod touch.
Though it would seem logical that any sales are sales, in truth the iPhone will be of substantially greater importance to the Apple lineup than the newest iteration of the iPhone; additionally, the iPhone, in simple business terms, costs more, so Apple would like to sell more of them.
Don’t fret; you can still enter calendar appointments on your Mac and have them carry over to your iPod. Also, there is little doubt that some hacker will find a way to allow you all the data entry in iCal your obsessive-compulsive little heart desires.
It is hard to blame Apple for trying to differentiate their products to save some functionality for the more pricey units; however, let me just say…honestly? You’re going to take away our right to enter appointments on the go? I shake my head in your general direction.

So I’m not going crazy after all! Yesterday, I had gone out of my way to confirm the ability to edit events and contacts by reading for myself the original version of the features. As I was about to order one today, I could not find the reference to editing events anymore. I thought I was imagining things! Alas, an Apple PDA without monthly fees seems too good to be true.

Yeah, I had to write an email to apple to tell them how low class I thought that move was. Not that my email will change anything, it was more for my well being. Well, if they want to sell more iPhones they’re going about it the wrong way. I was never going to buy an iphone, but an ipod touch…heck yes! I couldn’t wait to have an apple made product that would sync with my macbook’s ical. You can’t add entries? Are you kidding?! I thought apple sold products because of their outstanding quality, not because of trickery!

this was revised on sept. 11th, and says pretty much that you can add events on your ipod touch and sync them with your computer. so many different stories… i’m assuming its able to be a PDA now, but will they change their mind again before its release?
