"Mum is no longer the word" says Apple

By Sean P. Aune

"Mum is no longer the word" says Apple Apple does love to use some cryptic messages when they summon the press, and this time it’s the UK press that are being told “”Mum is no longer the word.”

The UK press are receiving an invite to a special event to be held at the London Apple store next week.  The suspicion is, of course, it is the announcement of the iPhone for the European markets at last.

While this may not sound like the most exciting news, it does present two interesting issues for the iPhone market at large: Will we finally see a 3G iPhone and will the SIM unlock software work?

There have been many complaints in the U.S. marketplace about the iPhone only pushing EDGE technology for its wireless functions.  With the lack of a fully integrated 3G network in the States, it was actually probably the wiser thing to go with, for now.  However, in Europe, 3G is everywhere.  Will this release finally prove that the iPhone can be taken to the next level?

With the release of the iPhone into another market, it would be a perfect time for Apple to release a new firmware update into the wild.  There is no theoretical reason why the current SIM card unlockers won’t work on the European iPhone, so one has to wonder if Apple might take this opportunity to “change the locks” as it were.

All shall be revealed on September 18th.
