UK Apple media event under whelms & disappoints
By Sean P. Aune
Titled as “Mum is no longer the word”, one has to wonder if the Apple media event should have even happened in London this morning.
Apparently Steve Jobs now considers announcing nine-month old news as deserving of it’s own media event. To add insult to injury, the iPhone won’t even be available in the UK until November 9th. And, not only is still a ways off, it will be carrying a price of £269 ($537.37).
As expected, 02 was announced as the exclusive carried in England, however, unlike in the United States, exclusivity on a handset only lasts 6 months. No announcement was made of carriers for France and Germany as of yet.
The most shocking news was that the phones would not be 3G, but instead, the much slower EDGE technology. Steve Jobs stated this was due to 3G being a “power hog”, but seeing as only 30% of the UK has EDGE coverage, this could be a major deterrent to potential customers. He did not rule out a 3G version down the road, but stated that Apple would like to see the power issues worked out first.
