Apple won’t recommend Leopard for G4 PowerPCs

By Triston McIntyre

Apple won’t recommend Leopard for G4 PowerPCsAs anticipation builds towards the now imminent release of Leopard, the next iteration of OS X, many users may be wondering if their technology can handle the powerful new OS. Apple just updated the recommended minimum system requirements for those considering an upgrade to Leopard, ruling out older 800 Mhz G4 Power PCs .

Originally Apple held that Leopard would require, “an Intel processor or a PowerPC G4 (800MHz or faster) or G5 processor.” However, Apple changed its stance on the grounds that Leopard runs too slowly on the older G4 models.

Fortunately, Apple hasn’t ruled out the G4 totally, updating its position to, “an Intel processor or a PowerPC G4 (867 MHz or faster) or G5 processor.” Those 67 Mhz must make a world of difference.

According to AppleInsider, this will rule out the models, “800MHz PowerBook G4 (Titanium), 800MHz PowerMac G4 (Quicksilver), 800MHz iMac G4, 800MHz iBook G4, and 800MHz eMac.”

Though these machines “could” theoretically run Leopard, it might be time to considering upgrading if you really are pressed over Leopard. It is noteworthy that earlier iterations of OS X are still far superior to any version of Windows, so keep Panther or Tiger on your G4 and buy something new and shiny for Leopard!

Going to purchase I new iMac on Oct/01, do I have to fork out another US$129.00 to get LEOPARD to be realease 30 days later? Can sameone tell anything about that?
      Thanks

i think you shouldnt get a mac. not because im a pc fan or w.e but for the simple reason that you dont know what you have to buy. You can go on a site like dell (i dont recomend them right now) or mdgdirect. Mayeb tigerdirect, ebay microbytes, or some other pc store. when you buy from them, you can just get xp (vista is kinda crapy right now) and you dont need to buy all those stupid upgrades and dumbas weird releases of all these cats. macs are more expensive for the same thing anyways.

    3. Ken:

Where are all the “Macs keep their value because you don’t need to buy new ones every 3 years to run the latest software” drones now?

    4. Triston McIntyre:

I would be one of those “drones” you’re referring to. They do keep their value, and if you remember, G4’s were in the era of Panther..two operating systems ago. What systems do you know that ran windows 98 that could run XP well, or even consider running Vista? Not a single one. Mind you, G4’s will run Leopard, just not well enough to recommend. If you have a G4, it will run Tiger perfectly as well. There’s no need to even respond to comments about how Dell is better….

To buelldm: There are no need for upgrades or weird released of “cats.” They are not more expensive for the same thing; you pay for more technology (show me the PCs that are coming equipped with wireless N cards, bluetooth, magnetic power cables, and superdrives, and I’ll show you a more expensive PC), as well as a superior operating system.

I can’t believe all of you are believing this rumors bullshit! Thats all it is, RUMORS RUMORS! I am sure the G4 will run nicely on leopard. I have a Digital Audio G4, but also am getting a MDD Mirror door machine with dual 1.25 - Besides, I am not a winbloze fan anyway, and believe fully apple has betrayed its clientele. SHame on Apple and this occursive cult of INTELISTS. Intel inside? hah! Should be powerpc all the way!

      A mac user against Intel!

As the 867 Mhz line is now over 5 years old I think OS X’s backward compatibility is nothing short of stellar when compared to what PC owners have had to deal with.

I just retired my 667 Mhz PowerBook for a new machine because after lugging it around where ever I went for 5 years, abusing it for over 14 hours each day, the little bugger’s video chip finally gave way.

Could it have been the the 1,800 battery cycles I put it through? Nah. Must have been the 10,000 hours it spent shacked to a 21″ monitor. Talk about out-living one’s expectations.

plus! u can build your own from parts cheap MAC i dont think so!!

    8. diernaes:

@Steven: I think you mean Vista ripped off Tiger (*grin*), but now Leopard is coming :-)
