Why the iPod touch isn’t expensive

September 28, 2007

Why the iPod touch isn't expensive When Steve Jobs announced the iPod touch there was thunderous applause for the 8GB version at $299 but when he mentioned that the 16GB version would be $399, the applause died down and I’m pretty sure you could hear crickets chirping.  It seems that people thought $399 was a bit expensive for a 16GB flash player with the multitouch interface but taking a look to the past, it really isn’t.

Queue “Dr. Who” theme song, let’s take a trip back to 2001 when Apple introduced the very first iPod with its manual click wheel, thick body, poor battery life (by today’s standards) and 2″ monochrome display.  This was revolutionary at the time and people lined up for it, at a $399 price tag for only 5GB of storage, paltry amount of space by modern requirements.

Back in 2001 people were willing to pay $399 for a thick player with only 5GB of storage, now flash forward to today.  The iPod Touch, 22 hour battery life (music only, WiFi off), 16GB capacity, 3.5-inch high resolution color LCD display with multitouch, mobile OSX, WiFi, Safari, YouTube, Calendar, Contacts, 8mm thin and so forth and you want to argue over a $399 price tag.  It’s the same price as the original iPod (not accounting for inflation because I’m bad at math nor do I care much for economics).

The iPod Touch is packed with technology that makes it well worth the $399 price tag provided you don’t have a music library exceeding 14GB which is the approximate usable space on the 16GB iPod Touch.  Buy whichever one suits your needs but 8GB wasn’t enough for me.

I think the iPod touch is totally worth the price. I’ve had previous iPods and I’ve always been satisfied, and the iPod touch has some really cool features that I’m looking forward to checking out.
