Free Mac Software Sundays: iSquint

September 30, 2007

iSquintToday marks the day we kick off Free Software Sundays, which is a post we’ll run every Sunday featuring a great piece of free software that we find interesting, fun, or useful. This week’s post features iSquint, a video converter for the iPod, but you can actually use it for a lot more.

iSquint takes all kinds video – AVI, DivX/XviD, Windows Media Video, .flv, all forms of MPEG, and more – and converts them to MP4 for the iPod, but you can also use it to convert video for the PS3. I had a hard time finding a free video converter for the PS3, and found that iSquint converts all kinds of video to a compatible PS3 format.

In order to do this, just make sure the “Optimize for TV” button is checked as opposed to the “Optimize for iPod” button, drag the video files into iSquint, and click “Start”. To convert for iPod use, check the iPod option instead.

iSquint is actually a dumbed down version of VisualHub, which adds advanced features to iSquint such as AutoCropping, Volume Amplification, and converting for DVD, PSP, DV, AVI, WMV, MPEG, TiVo, HDTV, Flash, and more. VisualHub costs $23.32 if the options entice you enough, but I find iSquint to be enough.

Although I’m sure the program has its fair share of bugs, I haven’t encountered any yet, and the program is very easy to use. You can learn more about and download iSquint here.
