Nokia Business School: Apple losing opportunites with iPhone
By Danny Mendez
As you may have noticed, the iPod Touch and the iPhone with the latest firmware update are really hard devices to hack in order to install 3rd party apps. With Apple limiting the function of its own devices, Nokia has taken the opportunity to advertise the openness of its phones, showing Apple what it takes to make a truly successful phone.
You can check out Nokia’s advertising efforts here and here, which feature lines like, “Phones should be open to anything,” and “The best devices have no limits.” And there’s no doubt that Nokia, one of the world’s most successful phone companies, knows what it’s doing.
Nokia’s N95 is a great phone, and, while it doesn’t achieve the sleekness of the iPhone, it’s still an amazing device surpassing many, if not all, of the locked phones you’ll find at your local Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint stores. One of the reasons the phone is so great is that it supports third party applications, allowing you to max out the handset to its potential. It’s also unlocked, and even Gizmodo’s own Brian Lam abandoned his iPhone for the openness of the N95.
The iPhone stands a chance to become “The Phone” in the highly competitive market of cell phones but only if it opens up. Otherwise, it’ll just be another “cool” Apple device but nothing that is must have.
It boggles the mind as to why Apple doesn’t open it up. It could be the near perfect device, allowing you to do anything on its beautiful touch screen. It could be revolutionary. It could be what EVERYONE wants, but Apple won’t let it be. Apple’s losing opportunities with the iPhone, and it’s not revolutionizing the cell phone world like it did with the computer world.
Perhaps one day we’ll have the perfect combination of Nokia’s openness and power with Apple’s sleek touch screen and iTunes compatibility. Until then, I strongly recommend you keep the 1.0.2 firmware or downgrade if you accidentally upgraded so that you can install 3rd party apps.
If you can’t get a hold of an iPhone with 1.0.2 firmware, I suggest you avoid buying the iPhone altogether. Show Apple that you won’t buy the device if you can’t do what you want with it.
What ever happened to consumer rights and unlock laws?

Wow there went 2 min. of my life that I will never get back
Apple announced early on that it would be a closed system. For you to wine that Apple just did this with out proper warning is ridiculous. If you want an open source system go Linux for both your computer and phone needs. If you want great machines that just work, and do what they do well, then its Apple all the way. If you want to develop great apps for the iPhone, then build a web page, for your app that is Safari friendly.
I love my iPhone, and you will have to pry it from my cold dead hands. If you phone was bricked, then… well… it sucks to be you.
