Apple Officially Launches Webapps Directory For iPhone and iPod Touch
By Sean P. Aune
Just yesterday we discussed the rumors of Apple launching a Webapps directory, and today that speculation came true.
Apple has officially launched their links page to applications optimized for use with their iPhone and iPod Touch products. Just point your handheld devices (or your web browser just to take a peak) to http://www.apple.com/webapps/.
There are currently over 200 apps in the directory, with links asking for more apps to apply, and a guide to developing your own.
The apps are currently broken in to categories that include Calculate, Entertainment, Games, News, Productivity, Search Tools, Social Networking, Sports, Travel, Utilities, and Weather.
What’s interesting is some of the big names that are missing thus far. Facebook is the only “big” social network represented, and the search tools are missing all of the big players. Perhaps their apps are in the pipeline, but so far they are missing.
While some parts are missing, this appears to be a good start to the fledgling webapps market built specifically for Apple devices.
