Free Mac Software Sundays: Adium
So you like to instant message and you’re bored with iChat? I’ve got the solution for you: Adium. It’s a highly customizable, open source IM app.
Adium is not your typical IM application. It supports a very wide variety of instant messaging protocols such as: AIM, Yahoo, MSN, Google Talk, ICQ, Live Journal Chat, Bonjour, Jabber, and almost every other generally adopted protocol. Adium even supports Gadu-Gadu (Polish), QQ (Chinese), and Yahoo Japan (Japanese).
Making Adium even more appealing is the ability to customize the look and feel of the app to pretty much whatever you want. Visit www.AdiumExtras.com to get all sorts of dock icons, emoticons, contact list styles, message styles, sound sets, status icons, service icons, menu bar icons, and plug-ins. While you can create your own custom “xtras”, there’s a whole community that contributes their creations for free.
When it comes to software, a lot of the time it doesn’t get better than some good ol’ open source collaboration. Feel free to download Adium at www.adiumx.com.
