Mac OSX Leopard educational discount: $69, not $116

By Danny Mendez

Mac OSX Leopard education discount: $69, not $116Students across the nation were a bit upset after finding out the educational discount for Leopard was only going cut $14 off the price, leaving it at $116. It turns out that’s not the whole story.

Leopard will sell for $116 to students through the Apple online store, but Leopard will also sell at various college book stores and computer shops for the very student friendly price of $69!

TUAW confirmed this information and explains that Apple doesn’t have a method of knowing if you’re an actual student when shopping online. Campus stores generally have a way of checking student credentials (or simply trust their students enough) to sell you Leopard at the real student price.

Bull! When I found out that I could get an educational discount on my first MBP (stolen 2/07, now replaced), I called the support line and they told me to send them a copy of my ID card, either by mail of fax. They could simply require the same thing for all academic purchases.

      Is the student version upgradeable?

    4. Danny Mendez:

The student version is the same as the regular version except that it costs less, so yes.

Unfortunately, some schools don’t have bookstores that sell software so they have no way of getting the educational price of $69. They are stuck with the online store.

Hallelujah! I really hope this is true for my college bookstore! I haven’t checked yet, but I’ll be rushing over this afternoon to find out… I was so upset at first cause I really can’t afford the $116 right now, but $69 is a LOT better. So if I can get it at that price, I will be buying ASAP!

Sucks to be me. My college bookstore isn’t carrying Leopard. Neither is my girlfriend’s college, which has an “iPod Villiage” (you think they’d be a little more apple friendly).

      le sigh

Looks like I’ll have to deal with Amazon’s “we’ll send it when we’re damned ready to send it” shit so I can get it for $109.
