Rumors circulate again of Apple prepping to use Penryn chips
By Sean P. Aune
As we reported earlier this month, it looks like Apple’s Mac Pro line will be graduating to Penryn chips early next year.
According to AppleInsider, Apple is merely awaiting the nod from Intel to make it official, but now word of when that will bel.
The Penryn chips are set to be the new top of the line chips coming out of Intel. At a mere 45-nanometers, and front-side bus speeds of 1333MHz or 1600MHz, there will be need a change to the Mac Pro’s innards to accommodate them.
The new iteration of the top tier Macs will be sporting up to an 8-core setup of the quad-core “Harpertown” chips. These will give the system a 1600MHz frontside bus, 12MB of L2 cache, and processing speeds of up to 3.2GHz.
This new setup will be around $1,000 just for the chips, so don’t expect to see the Mac Pro line becoming affordable for the everyday user any time soon.
