No MacBook Pro Slimline prepped for OS X Leopard release
Murmers have been echoing about the blogosphere regarding whether or not Apple is preparing a smaller, 13″ MacBook Pro to coincide with the Leopard release next Friday. Here are 2 reasons why that just isn’t going to happen.
1. Though a smaller MacBook Pro sounds nice, here’s why any new lappy will probably be a slightly upgraded version of the current MacBook – first of all, there’s a huge price gap between the most expensive MacBook and the cheapest MacBook Pro.
The things that distinguish the MacBook Pro 15″ and the 13″ MacBook are Firewire 800 compared to Firewire 400 in the MacBook, a 15″ versus a 13″ screen, seperate GPU versus integrated, aluminum casing versus plastic, and normal keyboard versus chicklet.
As I see it, the MacBook will receive the aluminum case in whatever update happens; there are too many problems with the cheap plastic casing for it to stick, and everyone loves the MacBook Pro and PowerBook design. The keyboard will go the MacBook way with the Chicklets. Firewire will remain 400, and there won’t be an increase in size; however, processors and speeds will receive a boost.
Whether or not that completely replaces the current line or will fit into that $1400-$1600 bracket is yet to be seen. Either way, a revamped MacBook is much more likely than a smaller MacBook Pro.
2. Though Leopard is being released next Friday, it would have made more sense to announce a new line of MacBooks earlier in the quarter, near school commencement. Debuting a new machine at this time would probably move a few machines, but no more than the current line will do.
If they debute the new and updated MacBook, I would expect to see it either before Christmas or in the first quarter of 2008.
