Multiple announced deals may bolster perceived sag in Apple’s iTunes

Multiple announced deals may bolster perceived sag in Apple's iTunes When NBC left Apple’s iTunes Store, some saw it as a sign the download service may be in danger.  Never one to to sit back quietly, Steve Jobs has been beating the streets for innovative deals.

First up, the long wished for 1970’s music powerhouse, Led Zepplin, is bringing their entire catalog, and a best of collection, to Apple.  “Mothership”, the retrospective, is a 24-track collection of the group’s biggest songs.  All 24 tracks were chose by the band’s three remaining members, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones.

“The Complete Led Zepplin” is a $99 monster that is just as the name implies, a complete discography.  It will contain 165 tracks, all of their original albums, as well as the afore mentioned “Mothership” retrospective.

Both items are available as of today for pre-order.  For those who pre-order the $99 set, you will also be entered in to a contest to see the band’s reunion performance in England on November 26th.

On the movie download side of things, it seems Apple is courting the independent and short film productions for inclusion in their store.  In a New York Times story today, it was discussed how Edward Burns’ latest film, Purple Violets, would be released on iTunes instead of theaters.

The filmmaker’s latest work was well received at the Sundance Film Festival, but the offers from the studios were weak.  Mr. Burns and his investors decided this was a better idea as it guaranteed a wider audience for the work.

The article also notes how director Wes Anderson released a free prequel to his latest movie, The Darjeeling Limited, via iTunes.  To date, Hotel Chevalier has been downloaded in excess of 400,000 times, and the studio is crediting it with some of the film’s success.

One comment in the article is sure to sadden Mr. Jobs though.

“Most people are going to watch on their iPod or a computer. The technology really isn’t there yet to move it over to TV. And people are much more apt to download shorts, because of YouTube and iTunes.” – Short film director, Tiffany Shlain

It would appear someone neglected to inform Ms. Shlain about the AppleTV.

Tiffany Shlain here, who you pulled my quote from the Nytimes artcle. I am aware of Apple TV –but it has not yet caught on with the masses. I think we are at least 1 year to 1.5 years off from it being A. seamless to download something and watch it in your living room and B. something many people will do. Right now it’s all about shorts films.

Or… you could use the XBox 360 dashboard. Or, you could use CinemaNow, or you could use MovieLink. But, since all of those work for PC’s today, I’m guessing you’ll just wait for Apple TV to have more than 3 users and call it “innovative” in some sort of arrogant Apple-fan way…

Just a quick note of clarification: My joke was meant to be directed at the AppleTV and NOT Ms. Shlain. I sent her a note on this, and it appears my humor failed. (big surprise) My mocking of the AppleTV is apparently not as well known as I thought :-p
