iPhone Dev Center unleashed!
By Danny Mendez
Awesome, right? Well, sort of. As a part of the Developer Connection, Apple just released the iPhone Dev Center featuring "resources and tools for developing web apps."
It’s not the official SDK for native iPhone/iPod Touch apps Apple promised, but it should help developers create better web apps. In their current state, web apps are a disappointment in comparison to their hack-friendly, native, third-party cousins.
Apple’s description of its new baby:
The iPhone Dev Center is your single source of information for designing, coding, and optimizing web applications for iPhone and iPod touch.
It features web development guidelines, videos, sample code, and a reference "library".
You have to register with Apple in order to use the Developer Connection, but the online membership is free and is full of useful information.
This isn’t exciting on its own, but at least it gives us an idea as to the kind of support third-party iPhone developers will receive come February. By increasing support for web-apps, I also have a feeling Apple is trying to prevent people from using or developing third-party, native apps, but perhaps that’s just the pessimist in me.
