Student makes amateur iPod Touch ad, Apple airs it on TV
The random amateur Apple ad is no stranger to YouTube, especially when the company introduces or updates a product. There’s a lot of talent in those fake ads, and it seems Apple is starting to realize this. As a result, Apple recently picked up a student’s ad to remake for TV distribution.
Nick Haley, an 18 year old English student of the University of Leeds, put together an iPod Touch ad last month, says the NY Times. Haley posted the ad on YouTube and described it under "About This Video":
I loved the look of the new iPod Touch, found this music, and thought it was perfect for it. I made a commercial using material from apple.com and edit[ed] in Apple’s Final Cut Pro.
The song of choice, "Music is My Hot, Hot Sex", is from a Brazilian band called CSS. The ad was recreated by the Apple agency, TBWA/Chiat/Day, and will begin airing this Sunday during "Desperate Housewives", Game 4 of the World Series, and various football games.
The recreated ad stays very true to the amateur version, and changes include polished editing, filming, and filming in high definition.
While riding on a bus, Haley opened his phone only to be taken aback by an e-mail from Apple. "We represent Apple and we’ve seen what you have produced and we’d like a chat with you." Haley was unconvinced, "This seemed ridiculous and far-fetched. My initial reaction was, someone wanted to steal it."
Suddenly, he found himself on his first trip to the US, where he met with the Apple’s ad agency in Los Angeles. Haley finds the new ad "pretty similar" to his original and was able to share his ideas with the ad-making team, which "totally respected" his input according to the young ad maker.
