Google’s phone software no threat to Apple’s iPhone

By Triston McIntyre

GoogleThe long-awaited announcement regarding Google’s foray into the cell phone market came today, as Google announced they will be distributing a free software package to manufacturers by the second half of 2008.

Completely free, this package, called the “software stack,” will be distributed to any manufacturers who want it; to those manufacturers who are currently paying money to Microsoft for its Windows Mobile software might do very well to switch to Google’s software.

Some companies that are already confirmed to be working the software into their products are Motorola, Samsung, HTC, and LG.

Google aims to bring a unique and inventive way for users to utilize the internet from their mobile phones; something the iPhone does with class and style already.

So, the question at hand is whether Google’s software on various manufacturers’ phones poses a threat to the iPhone. The answer is definitively no.

The one thing that will forever separate the iPhone from any other mobile unit on the market is that it is unique both in hardware and software design. Google’s software will be distributed amongst a variety of handsets; even though it will be readily available to everyone, the uniqueness of owning an iPhone will remain in the face of everyone else touting Google software.

All Google’s software really means is the people who either don’t want an iPhone or are unwilling to use AT&T’s service will be seeing the next big step in mobile phone software. Those who want iPhones will still buy them, because there won’t be anything out there like it.
