ZDNet writer drags Leopard’s name through the mud

ZDNet writer drags Leopard’s name through the mudDon’t let it be said that I am a fanboy; I idolize objectivity as much as the next writer. However, when someone draws false comparisons that directly reference Apple, I feel it is my responsibility to correct any discrepancies to the best of my ability.

One such error was made by ZDNet writer Adrian Kingsley-Hughes in an article he titled “Leopard and Vista – More alike than you might think.”

The conclusion he reached in the article was that Leopard, like Vista, was rushed to the market, and really isn’t much better than Vista in quality.

He stated, “Leopard’s not generating good press for Apple at the moment (actually, when you stop and thing about it for a moment, not much is generating good press for Apple lately) and it might help is affected users were given a timetable of when to expect robust fixes to come down the tubes.”

Give the article a full read to get a feel for what he has to say about Leopard in regards to Vista’s release.

First: it really isn’t fair to compare Leopard to Vista, an operating system that has been almost completely abandoned by the manufacturers because it is such a shoddy OS, simply because it is having right-out-the-door problems that all OS’s have.

OS X Leopard was not rushed, by any means. Neither has it garnered poor press for Apple; in fact, most critics are hailing it as the best OS in the world right now. How that is bad press is beyond me.

Furthermore, those that have been with OS X for a while now know that Apple is dilligent about turning out updates on a frequent and rapid basis. They do so even more quickly when an issue needs pertinent resolution. Apple has already started circulating a patch to rectify those issues, as noted in a recent article here.

I have nothing personal against Kingsley-Hughes; I just feel like this is another example of an unfair comparison for the purpose of drawing traffic with a controversial title.

What a ridiculous rebuttal to suggest that his point is comparable to the analogy that “Boeing’s most recent passenger vessel is just like those biplanes of the early 1900’s because Boeing’s new plane has landing gear issues Boeing is working to resolve, and those early biplanes had lots of problems too.”

Yes, since Windows Vista was released 106 years before Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, and thus shouldn’t be compared. That logic just doesn’t follow.

The whole point I was making in the first place with the faulty analogy was that it was a faulty analogy..in case you missed that.

    Triston,

    You are a fanboy.

“almost completely abandoned by the manufacturers because it is such a shoddy OS”

Vista is installed on more computers than OS X total.

See how easy it is to throw out emotional statements without any numbers? I enjoy reading your articles, but to say you aren’t an Apple apologist isn’t true.

if its such a faulty analogy then why does apple keeps on comparing leopard to vista? comes from a person who grew up on an apple mac and will never go back to one.
