iPod Touch 1.1.2 update enables calendar events, iTunes battery status
By Jonathan Schlaffer
You’ve seen sites reporting that the new firmware for the iPod Touch and iPhone is out, it is but it has not yet hit iTunes so you will have to update manually. There are a few noticeable surprises in store for users.
Before moving on, this will break any current jailbreak you have installed on your iPhone/iPod Touch and I’m not a fan of all these jailbreak attempts, there is nothing I need that isn’t already provided on the iPod Touch but feel free to think otherwise but I do not see the point.
At any rate the latest firmware does have a few surprises in store. Some people were reporting that iTunes 7.5 included the battery meter in the sidebar but I did not notice this until installing the 1.1.2 firmware, your mileage may vary.
And finally, the iPod Touch now has the ability to add calendar events directly from the calendar app, Apple righted a wrong with this one, kudos to them but shame on them for this not being the case in the first place.
Those are the noticeable changes, those of you who like examining code can go ahead and see what’s under the hood, programming and interpreting code just isn’t my thing.
If you are interested in updating your iPod Touch before the firmware is officially available on iTunes you can download the update file manually right here and Windows users can “shift + click” the “Check for Updates” button in iTunes which will allow you to select the update file and that will enable iTunes to do its thing that it does so well. Similar instructions apply to Mac users.

I just don’t see the point, I don’t need the extra apps that people are putting out… that’s what a computer is for… the iPod Touch IS NOT a computer, despite popular belief.
If YouTube, Safari and a Calendar app aren’t enough for you… many IM apps can be accessed over the web through Safari and who wants to check email on their iPod? I don’t want… or need to do so (again… that’s what a computer is for).

Or I can just login to my webmail from Safari… (yeah, so hard to do…)

I’ve got a v1.1.1 Touch, and have downloaded the 1.1.2 patch file. I double click it and end up in iTunes at the sync screen, but when I sync I’m told that my Touch is up-to-date with version 1.1.1 (and the patch file gets deleted.) Any suggestions as to what might be going wrong ?

Double clicking it is the wrong thing to do… you have to shift and left click the Check for Updates button and manually select the file to update from… instead of selecting to open the file, simply save it to a convenient location… and when iTunes asks which file to use, navigate to the directory where it is and select it.

I don’t need the calendar events as much I need the lyrics function!
I hope Apple includes the lyrics firmware in their next update.
