Free Mac Software Sunday: Gmail Notifier
By Danny Mendez
Google doesn’t have a dedicated application for checking email offline as they support various offline clients, but if you’d like a desktop tool to notify you of new and unread messages, look no further than Gmail Notifier.
Google Notifier, as it is now called, will notify you of any new messages fairly quickly, typically within five minutes. Furthermore, one of the latest updates adds the ability to add the Google Calendar notifier, which will notify you of any upcoming entries on your Calendar.
The application is customizable to a small degree, and it really is meant to do just one task fairly well. The app lives at the top of your screen in the form of a small, red envelope. You can click on the unread messages through Notifier and it’ll open a web page to that message in Gmail. Notifier works best with an always-on connection to the Internet, so it wouldn’t work well with a dail-up set up.
You can get Google Notifier for Mac here from Google.

There’s also a cool widget called Gpeek that runs on the dashboard and will not only alert you to new mail, but will preview the messages.
