Apple pays Burst.com $10M to settle dispute

By Jonathan Schlaffer

reg The lawsuit involving Burst.com and Apple has now come to a close with apple paying out $10 million to settle the dispute over some patents.

Burst filed a lawsuit against Apple last year with the claims that the iPod, iTunes and QuickTime products used technology that Burst owned the patents to.  Burst makes software that allows what they call “faster than real time video” and is the technology that allows a 30 minute video to be downloaded in less than 30 minutes.

Apple was not Burst’s first target, according to Cnet, back in 2005 Microsoft had to pay Burst $60 million for the same patents.

For the $10 million, Apple gets the rights to use most of the patents owned by Burst except for a few relating to DVR technologies and some that are still in the application stage.

Burst is done with Apple and (presumably) Microsoft, saying that the company would not target Apple in the future for any infringement relating to the same patents.

However, other companies that may be using the same patents are not out of the water as it said, “Burst plans to continue identifying and evaluating companies who represent licensing opportunities and intends to diligently pursue those likely to yield suitable returns.”
