Tiger update causing BootCamp conflicts, system crashes
Apple users still using Tiger, the previous version to Leopard are discovering that the latest update probably isn’t worth installing just yet. A few reports of system crashes and Macs refusing to boot after the update have come in.
InformationWeek says the Apple support site has plenty of posts reporting problems of varying degrees but most cannot be rectified unless the system is restored using the included restore media. The company is remaining silent about any problems saying only that “third party software” can cause problems with the update.
Some users think the problem is related to using BootCamp but that has not been confirmed. However, removing BootCamp before the update certainly couldn’t hurt things.
Problems range from Macs refusing to boot to booting but then immediately freezing on startup the only solution is to wipe the hard drive and start over, if it’s under warranty the folks at the Apple Store should be more than happy to oblige but that’s no consolation for losing all your photos, music and various other files.
Just stay away from Tiger 10.4.11 until reports of these problems slow down or disappear.
