Free Mac Sunday, cool your Intel Mac with smcFanControl

December 2, 2007

smc Apple designs fashionable computers with attention to little else, cooling is almost an afterthought and Macs, especially the laptops can get unfashionably hot.  Enter smcFanControl which can control the fan speeds of almost any Intel based Mac.

smcFanControl is a small application that will reside in your menu bar and will report on the fan speeds and temperature of the processor.

It can be set to have the fans run at the same speed all the time, for quiet operation, for maximum cooling or can be set to dynamically change the fan speed based on the temperature of the processor.

While it is effective at reducing the temperatures of most Intel Macs, the one that it probably has the biggest effect on is the MacBook because of it’s poor cooling design with the vents partially blocked by the LCD lid.

smcFanControl is compatible with OSX Tiger, there is no mention of Leopard compatibility but several forum posts suggest it will run on Leopard but may not behave as intended.
