iTunes movie rentals coming January 15th?
The poor little Apple TV is sitting, lonely, on shelves in Apple stores nationwide; however, the little shiny box’s future might change within a month, or so a few select few believe.
Word on the iStreet is that rentals could hit iTunes and the Apple TV at MacWorld, January 15th.Gene Munster, analyst for Piper Jaffray (who, I might add, is apparently the forecasting authority on all things Apple), believes that a breathe of life might fill the lungs of the Apple TV when Steve Jobs announces a software update to iTunes and the Apple TV that will allow users to rent movies via the internet, according to MacDailyNews.
I think that rentals could help the Apple TV’s case; however, I think the deal will have to be done just right…proper pricing, rental length, movie quality, etc. will have to be addressed delicately.Additionally, Apple could really solidify the popularity of the Apple TV if it would only start releasing HD content for purchase as well as rental.
Obviously, DRM concerns are holding back the success of iTunes movies right now, but hopefully good old Steve can finagle a few workarounds and get quality DRM-free content, both regular and HD, available to the consumer public for rental and purchase in the near future.
