Leopard is a top seller for Apple

By Jonathan Schlaffer

Leopard is a top seller for Apple Leopard has been here for some time now and it has taken Apple stores and Macs by storm.  Steve Jobs always claims that the latest release of Mac OS is “the best version of Mac OSX ever” and he may just be right with Leopard OSX 10.5.

It has broken all previous sales record for the Mac OS, not to mention the fact that it is included on all new Macs.

The Money Times says sales of Leopard are up by 33% in dollar volume and by 21% in unit volume when compared with the previous version, Tiger, over the same time frame.

Possibly one of the best things about Leopard and all Mac OSX releases, there are no differentiated versions, except for Mac OSX Server which is not available on consumer models.

This means there is less confusion regarding Mac OS where Windows Vista has Basic, Premium, Business and Ultimate editions, all with slightly different feature sets.  There is almost no doubt that at least some of those sales are people who wished to upgrade and didn’t want to deal with Vista or the pain of Linux.

It is also much cheaper that Vista, a single user copy of Leopard costs $129 or a five user license can be purchased for $199 for a single household.  Retail copies of Vista are much more expensive but an OEM version of Vista Home Premium 32-bit or 64-bit costs around $115.

Leopard offers up full 64-bit support, where Vista is still primarily 32-bit and 64-bit driver and application support is still quite lacking.

It’s no wonder the latest OSX is a top seller but Macs are a quite expensive one time payment (if you do not finance it through Apple) but owning one can save you money over time as you do not need subscriptions to security applications.
