iPhone to get Vista SideShow feature
Microsoft has been touting a feature in Vista known as SideShow which allows users to access basic functions of their laptops through a smaller secondary display and view emails, play music and other mundane tasks. For laptop PCs, it’s more of a gimmick, not many laptops have this feature and those that do, it’s mostly useless and somewhat of a waste. But, a consulting firm is hoping to bring a SideShow-like feature to the iPhone.
Ikanos Consulting wants to bring something like SideShow to the iPhone where you will be able to see at-a-glance emails, RSS feeds, news, stocks, media player status and possibly presentations (which are not yet supported on the iPhone/iPod touch).
Note that if this works on the iPhone it is very likely that it will also work on the iPod Touch.
Mobile Mag reports that this functionality may be brought to the Nintendo DS, Wii, Sony PSP and PS3 as well. Ikanos says their system will use a web service to deliver this functionality rather than installing some kind of application.
I can understand brining the functionality to purely mobile devices but what purpose can this really serve on home consoles, I just don’t see that implementation being very popular.
