Shipping early: Fox DVDs with iPod compatible digital copy
By Danny Mendez
Further confirming the Apple-Fox deal to add movie rentals to the iTunes store, word on the web is Fox DVDs bundled with iPod compatible digital copies are hitting the store shelves early.
A web surfer by the name of mr echo informed MacRumors that he purchased a Family Guy DVD meant to be released January 15th. Upon further inspection, he noticed the package included a digital, iPod compatible copy.
In December, the Financial Times received word about the Apple-Fox deal. According to the rumor, an iTunes update will be announced, adding movie rental options to the store. All movies will expire after a set amount of time. The source only mentioned Fox, but other studios are likely to be on board as well.
Movie rentals, especially high definition movie rentals, may be the Apple TV’s hero. Critics of the Apple TV consider the product flawed since it’s meant to only work on HDTVs, but Apple doesn’t sell any HD content. Unless you plan to re-encode your entire video library, only videos encoded in Apple’s format may be played on the set-top box.
