Apple breathes new life into Apple TV with iTunes HD movie rentals

By Triston McIntyre

Apple breathes new life into Apple TV with iTunes HD movie rentalsFor those of you who has no idea what is going on and calls yourself a Mac-head, shame on you; for the rest, you know that Steve made a bunch of big announcements today, two of which were a revamped launch of the Apple TV and the iTunes movie rental service.  Individually, the Apple TV struggled; with movie rentals, the Apple TV will be nothing short of on fire.

Why, if users can download movies for rental to their computers or personal devices, will the Apple TV be selling like hotcakes, one might ask.  HD, friends, is the largest announcement for MacWorld this year.

HD is also only available for online rental with your Apple TV purchase. What everyone has been waiting for, direct download of HD content, is now available.  Hello people!  This means you can stop worrying about buying that Blu-Ray player if owning a collection of expensive discs isn’t your style.  Sure, they are only available for rental right now, but HD titles via iTunes will be popular, mark my words.

If you noticed, all the studios that were involved in the heated Blu-ray and HD-DVD war have already signed on to participate with iTunes.  Let’s take a moment to talk about the pricing: $5 for a 24 HD rental; considering you can hold on to the title for up to 30 days until you begin watching, that’s quite a steal.  Let’s be real for a moment; how often do people watch a title they rent repeatedly?  That shouldn’t be an issue.

All things considered, anyone with an HD set should be very interested in Apple’s newly invigorated little TV unit.  After all, who doesn’t want something shiny from Apple accompanying their HD set for all their friends to see.

How long will it take for all the HD goodness to download? Is it a streamed process? I went to the Apple site to look at the presentation, but I don’t really want to install Quicktime/iTunes just to watch it. Why didn’t they just use Flash? That way, everyone with an iPhone could watch…..Oh, wait.
