DIY MacBook Air battery replacements coming soon
The MacBook Air as I’m sure you are all now well aware is the thinnest, lightest and most expensive laptop to come out of the door of Cupertino, so far. As such, many assumed it would be difficult to service yourself but it turns out that may not be the case, at least when it comes to the battery.
It turns out that all is needed to replace the battery in the MacBook Air is a standard size-0 philips screwdriver and knowing which screws to remove.
Sometimes, removing the screws on a laptop isn’t the easiest thing to do so a pair of pliers may help.
Unlike some of Apple’s other devices, the battery is not soldered to the motherboard and can be removed with relative ease.
Apple charges $129 for a MacBook Air battery replacement but the service is currently mail-in only and has a turnaround time of five days.
AppleInsider reports that it takes an Apple technician about three minutes to perform a battery replacement. Being that this is a simple procedure it may be offered at Apple Stores soon after the laptop ships but you’ll probably still be charged the same $129 fee.
Given how easy this is, I’m sure it won’t be long before third party providers begin offering DIY battery replacement kits or even 24 to 48 hour mail-in service for less than Apple would charge.
It’s not clear if having this serviced performed by a third party or doing it yourself will void the warranty.
