Tips and tricks: keeping your Macbook clean as a whistle
By Triston McIntyre
Though I have been known to advocate the Macbook Pro over the standard Macbook, I am a reasonable fellow, and understand that not everyone is in love with the brushed aluminum like myself. For all you white shell lovers, you need ways to ensure your Macbook keeps neat, tidy and shiny.
With that in mind, here are a few things you can do to make sure that the white case on your Macbook stays in tidy shape; that isn’t to say that you can’t apply these rules to the black Macbook, but we all know the white case takes a lot more care than just about any other Mac out there.
The biggest issue with the Macbook is the “staining” issue of the white hardware after use; this results from simply resting your hands, which, believe it or not, excrete sweat that will build up on your Macbook. As unattractive as that may be, here are two pretty solid solutions.
The first is quite entertainingly unique; how thou keepest thy own teeth clean, thou shalt also keep thou Macbook clean. That’s right…toothpaste. According to Lifehacker, you can rub toothpaste, say Arm and Hammer with baking soda, on the stains on your Macbook, and clear away with a moist cloth. Who’da thunk it?
A slightly less ingenious but equally effective method would be employing a little device known as the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. It isn’t abrasive, but with few little careful “wax on, wax off” motions, your stains will be vanquished. This is the method I use frequently, even for my Macbook Pro.
A third thing you can do is a preemptive measure; as crazy as this might sound, you can save yourself a lot of trouble by simply washing your hands a lot. For myself and many other computer-oriented folks, by breaking every little while to wash your hands, you can avoid that grimy sticky feeling that will eventually plague your keys and wrist pads. You’d be surprised how lovely typing becomes when your fingers and your Macbook are squeaky clean.
Hopefully these steps help you ensure that your Macbook doesn’t suffer the fate of its cohorts, what with all the stains and greasy grimy build up. Good night and good luck.
