Will the updated MacBook Pro be released today? The Apple store is closed.

February 12, 2008

Apple-maintenance.jpgIf you tried to log into the Apple store a few moments ago you were greeted with their “down for maintenance icon.” Apple is down for the second Tuesday in two weeks. Will we be receiving the much anticipated MacBook Pro today? Many people hope so.

Recently I wrote about the MacBook Pro and how many have reported that the update is right around the corner. People have been waiting impatiently for the upgraded MacBook Pro and many have suggested that we might see an updated MacBook Pro released today. Typically Apple updates their product line on Tuesdays.

A major upgrade isn’t expected to the line since it wasn’t announced at MacWorld 2008. Most people believe that we will see the multi-touch trackpad make its way into the updated MacBook Pro line. We also might see the Penryn-based Core 2 Duo mobile processor with the updated MacBook Pro. I also guessed that we will see “a greener Apple” when the new MacBook Pro rolls around. Apple has been working to improving their image when it comes to being environmentally friendly so I’m guessing that they will continue to move forward with this venture.

The Apple store was down last Tuesday and when they reopened their virtual doors we saw an update with the iPhone and the iPod touch. What will they update this time? Hopefully, Apple won’t make us wait to long and finally give us the long awaited MacBook Pro.

As soon as we learn more, we’ll keep you posted.

Update: We didn’t see an updated MacBook Pro; however, the long awaited Aperture 2 has been released.

Well, the store is back up and no new MacBook Pros :(

  2. S Ramini:

Apple is messing with us! I’m tired of waiting for a this update, it’s been too long. You know it’s been too long when you can config a macbook to the same specs as a macbook pro.

  3. Opal Tribble:

    DK,
Yes, I saw that I was disappointed. The good news is Aperture has been updated but I was hoping for a MacBook Pro update. :-(

    S Ramini,
You know I’m starting to think that. An update is long overdo. I’m torn I’m not sure if I should upgrade now or wait until a major update. I have had mine since October 2006 so I might update this time although in my last post I said I wouldn’t.

  4. Bryant:

Apple will not be releasing the new MBP anytime soon in my opinion.

MBA is still new, and they usually wait a couple months to get profit to back any kind of loss for a new product.

March 18th is a good date but with all this every Tuesday talk you never know.

  5. Opal Tribble:

    Bryant,
No, don’t say that! :-) You might be right.

Apple is two for two. It makes me wonder if we’ll have a “three-peat”?

  6. Mr. A. Noying:

“I also guessed that we will see “a greener Apple” when the new MacBook Pro roles around.”

    Don’t you mean “rolls around”?

  7. Jack:

I’m looking to purchase a macbook pro – my 1st apple computer. Should I wait until next Tuesday?

  8. Opal Tribble:

    Mr. A,
    Yes I did and thanks.

    Jack,
If I were I in the market for a new computer. I would hold off even if that meant waiting a few weeks or a month.

Actually that is what I’m doing now. I wasn’t going to purchase another MacBook Pro, but I believe I will when they are released.

  9. Jack:

Is it guaranteed that they will release a newer version? Why are you so confident about the next month? I’m just exploring my options here – please don’t take this personally. Appreciate anyone who can contribute.

  10. Opal Tribble:

    Jack,
I don’t take it personally I was just saying what I would do. No, no one knows for sure when the update will come out. The MacBook Pro hasn’t received a real update since June 2007. Which leads many to think it will be sooner rather than later.

Shortly after I purchased my 17″ MBP it was updated. If mine hadn’t been customized I could have updated to the newer model for a small fee. I think it was a little over $100? I wouldn’t have done it though. I really liked my MBP.

If you don’t want to wait around for the MBP by all means go out and buy one. They are excellent machines. My only regret is that I didn’t make the switch sooner.

Also, if you are a new to the Mac check out David Pogue’s book, Mac OS X Leopard Edition: The Missing Manual. It’s an excellent book for the first time Mac users. I recently bought the Tiger edition although I’m fairly knowledgeable about Tiger I even picked up some great tips. I’ve heard great things about the Leopard edition.

I haven’t upgraded to Leopard; however, I will have to in order to write about it here on BLORGE.

  11. West:

I wish Apple could make a calendar which would tell us when their products would be updated. Even though they might not come on the exact date, the month or even season would be nice.

    One question Opal.
Do you know how long the Macbooks usually last before they are Drastically changed? Like, a new look with more power and all that jazz? Just wondering…

  12. Jack:

Thanks for your response. I have seen many things on the web indicating a close release date for the pro. I will wait another 2 weeks. BTW, does apple ever release dates?

  13. Jack:

One more question – about Pogue’s book. Would you recommend “”Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual, Leopard Edition (Missing Manual) (Paperback”" or Mac OS X Leopard: The Missing Manual [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback). Thanks so much for your help !

  14. Ike:

I’m looking for a new laptop and am leaning towards the macbook pro. I’ve seen internet chatter pointing to a close release date. Is any of it credible? Are there any release dates?

  15. Opal Tribble:

    West,
That would be great wouldn’t it? I know gaming developers do that?

    Jack,
At times they will tell the month for a release date; for example, the Time Capsule is on the website for release this month. You can preorder it. However, a release date hasn’t been given.

For example with Tuesdays release Aperture was the new product but Apple TV also was released but that wasn’t the new product. It was already on the Apple website. Aperture 2 wasn’t.

I’m thinking they will update Time Capsule to “shipping” with one of the Tuesday updates in February. I’m just waiting and hoping that MBP will be the new update that accompanies it.

I checked out the other book you were referring to last year. It depends on what you want.

Pogue follows the same format with the updated OS so “Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual, Leopard Edition” focus on the differences between the OS he wants you to be comfortable with the switch. When I first made the switch, I had to get out of my head that the Mac should be like Windows. Pogue is very good. I like how he writes. Switching to the Mac series will help fill in the gaps when it comes to transitioning to a Mac.

The Mac OS X: Leopard Edition is longer (over 800 pages I believe) and reading the reviews even people who are new to Windows have had great results with the book.

What you might want to do is call your local bookstore to see whether they have both books available. If not they can order them for you. When they arrive you could go to the bookstore, flip through them, to see what you like the best. Some have picked up both. If I had known about “Switching to the Mac” when I transitioned I definitely would have purchased it.

    Ike,
People are speculating based on the past releases of an updated model. The MacBook Pro hasn’t seen a real update since June 2007 which makes people think it has to be soon. The MacBook was updated in November 2007 (I believe) a minor update (Santa Rosa platform, and Core 2 Duo 2.0 or 2.2 GHZ).

In January, the Mac Pro was updated we also saw a new series the MacBook Air. Many people think the MacBook Air is next because simply because it hasn’t seen an update in a while.

  16. Ike:

There is a story roaming around of Best Buy being sold out of the PRO – does this mean anything is coming out soon?

  17. Opal Tribble:

    Ike,
I heard that also in fact I’ll probably be writing an article about that tomorrow. It’s more than Best Buy. ;-)

  18. Stephen:

    Hi all ,
As patiently as we all have been waiting so long for New MBP’s apple insider has posted that there is another Conference called “Computex Taipei” 2008 which runs June 3 – 7 which may bring a new line of Macbook Pro’s and Macbooks which could possibly be fitted with an even newer chip “Centrino 2″, so what puzzles me is that although there may be a refresh on MBP’s does that mean later in June there will be another update?

  19. Opal Tribble:

    Stephen,
I think that is a possibility. After I purchased my MBP there were two updates. One update arrived shortly after I purchased my 17″ MBP and another update came in June 2007.

  20. JASE:

    hi all
im holding out for the new upgrade mbp cos it must be around the corner as the body of the mbp is getting a bit dated compared to the macbook. ive got one question when the new machines come out will the price go up,stay the same or be cheaper???

    cheers

  21. Opal Tribble:

    Jase,
If they follow what they’ve done in the past update, it will be the same price or slightly cheaper.

  22. jag:

    hi all,

im waiting for the new MBP to come so i can make the switch from pc to mac. although i cant afford one right now, im really eager for it to be released so i can read up on it and its reviews.

  23. Opal Tribble:

    jag,
I believe you’ll enjoy the Mac, and it is a smart move reading up on it first. I remember one blogger went on a rant about not being able to right click with the Mac. He dedicated a blog article to the topic. The thing is you can right click with a Mac. His problem was he was treating the Mac like Windows. You really cannot do that and expect the same results. They are two different systems.

What held him back was the fact that he didn’t bother to learn the differences between the Mac and the PC. I tell people that the learning curve is low. I purchased a PowerMac G5 for my father, a week after I purchased the MacBook Pro for myself. He made the transition without a problem. My father isn’t a poweruser, and he had no problem transitioning. The few questions he did have me was able to help him out or he could have found by Googling.

I think some people make the transition to the Mac thinking a lot harder than it really is simply because they think it will be exactly like the PC. It’s not. After years of working with Windows in the work environment (IT) I switched to the Mac for home use. I like it the Mac a lot better.

Each system has it’s positives and negatives I just prefer the Mac. I still use Windows, but now I use only it when I have to.

I would definitely recommend the books by David Pogue (Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual, Leopard Edition or The Mac OS X: Leopard Edition) and and also don’t forget the Apple forums the few questions I had when I made the switch were answered by their users. For the most part I have found that community to be extremely helpful and I always received the answer to my question.

Also, if you think of topics you would like to see discuss for a new user here on MAC.BLORGE by all means let me know. I’ve been thinking of writing a series for users new to the Mac.

Let’s see if today is the day of the updated Macbook Pro.
