Apple releases iTunes 7.6.1 improving compatibility with Apple TV, guarantees weekly 99-cent rentals

Apple has released iTunes 7.6.1 through its software update utility. If you check out the notes that accompany the software update, you will note that several bugs were fixed including compatibility with Apple TV software version 2.0. Apple recently added new features to iTunes. You can now rent and download your favorite movies onto your computer or Apple TV. You’re also able to rent movies up to 720HD complete with surround sound on your Apple TV.
If you like watching movies on the go you can easily transfer your movies to your iPod or iPhone. Although I’ve transferred a few movies to my iPod I still prefer to watch the movies on my 17″ MacBook Pro; however, it is nice to have that option if I want to use it. You also have the option to download and purchase your favorite TV shows, music, and more directly to your Apple TV. iTunes makes the process of transferring purchases from your Apple TV back to your computer very easy.

Apple is now offering a selected movie title weekly for the low price of 99 cents, or a third of the price of a back catalog, standard-definition title. The first title was released last week it was Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The movie title available this week is The Hours. You will see the special pricing each Thursday, and it will last until the following Monday. If you regularly use iTunes you might know that Apple often offers discounts on music, including free weekly tracks which appear on Tuesday. However, this is the first time they’ve offered discounts on videos.
Has anyone else noticed that Apple has been beating their own promise when it comes to video rentals? They promised that new titles would be released 30 days after the DVD release. I’m noticing many titles such as The Brave One, Michael Clayton, The Assassination of Jesse James, are being released much before the 30 day mark; in fact, some of them have hit iTunes the next day. Library titles are $2.99 and new releases are $3.99.
Apple unveiled iTunes 7.6 during the MacWorld Expo after announcing movie rentals for iTunes and Apple TV. Apple has partnered with Fox, Disney, Lions Gate, Miramax, MGM, New Line, Paramount, Universal, Sony, Touchstone, and WB to bring movies to the service.
