Apple triumphs, beating out Dell for top spot in US higher education laptop market
By Opal Tribble
Has Apple taken over the top spot for laptops in the US higher education market? It looks that way, in a recent speech given to Goldman Sachs Technology Investment Tim Cook, the chief operating officer for Apple stated.
“We just received word on Monday that Apple surpassed Dell as the number one supplier of portables to US higher education for 2007″
Apple offers excellent education discounts, A Mac can be used out of the box, I imagine this has made Macs more appealing to some. Thanks to the education discount I saved over $500 when I purchased my customized 17″ MacBook Pro. Cook also said.
“The ceiling for the Macs is nowhere in sight. Even if the market itself isn’t growing, for us, switching Windows users is an enormous opportunity”
Apple took over the top spot in Europe in 2006 by taking 15.2 per cent market share of desktop and laptop sales. Herve Marchent, Apple director of EMEA education markets, confirmed that it climbed a few points in the third quarter of 2007 taking 19.6 per cent marketshare in Europe’s education sector.
Public figures haven’t been released from Garner; Inc. or IDC tracking the share Apple has on the education market.
Gartner, Inc recently stated that Apple would double its market share by 2001.
“By 2011, Apple will double its U.S. and Western Europe unit market share in Computers. Apple’s gains in computer market share reflect as much on the failures of the rest of the industry as on Apple’s success.”
