Apple Releases iPhone Open SDK, iFund, Gets Apps
By Leslie Poston
Apple has announced that iPhone’s SDK is now open to third party developers. In fact, the number of developers able to create applications for the iPhone such a short time after the SDK was released is quite impressive. It includes a roster of big names that include EA Games, FaceBook and Sega, to name a few. Developers can sign up for the program for $99 USD.
While some development teams are already playing with the SDK, it doesn’t go out to the public officially until the summer of 2008. For people who can’t wait until June, there are 7 applications that came out with the announcement of SDK today. These include: TouchFX, Touch Fighter, Spore, SalesForce, AIM, Medical Records, Super Monkey Ball.
By far the application getting the most buzz is the Electronic Arts (EA Games) game Spore. Spore is a little too much like The Sims and other games where you play god, creating worlds. These games have never held much appeal to me, but they have a special place in the hearts of many.
To me the more interesting announcement was the iFund. Apparently Apple will be offering guidance and decision making help in the form of its first venture capital investment firm. Partnering with KPCB, Apple will offer guidance on funding. The eyes of the technology world will be following Apple to see who or what it decides worthy of receiving funding.
