Apple puts an end to MacBook (Pro) 6-bit display dispute
It seems that there is no making some people happy. Around 10 months ago, two professional photograhers from California decided to file a class action lawsuit over MacBook (Pro) displays.
The position of the photographers was how Apple uses 6-bit displays in their MacBooks and MacBook Pros. On most Mac laptops you are "only" able to set "millions of colors" on the display as opposed to the actual colors.
According to the Chicago Tribune the lawsuit, "The displays are only capable of displaying the illusion of millions of colors through the use of a software technique referred to as ‘dithering.’"
For a photographer and for the two men in the lawsuit this might be an important distinction but to my eyes, the display on my MacBook Pro appears to be superior to that of the one on my PC laptop.
One of the attoreny’s involved in the case said that it is a "misrepresentation" on Apple’s part. He went on to make the distinction bewteen "millions of colors" and the "dithering" method that Apple uses.
Needless to say blogs supporting both sides lit up, some dissmissing it as frivolous and some saying it had merit. Well, they didn’t have much of a class action lawsuit as almost no one else came forward and settled out of court with Apple.
Both sides are happy, I suppose; the details of the settlement were not released.
