April 2, 2008

apple.jpegWill Apple be developing a multi-touch screen for Macs? According to Gene Munster, analyst for investment bank Pipper Jaffrey we should expect it. Gene Munster said…

“Looking into 2010, we expect Apple to advance its touchscreen technology, known as multi-touch, from simple trackpad features to a complete MacBook touch with touchscreen keypad features,”

“Discussions we have had with component suppliers indicate that Apple is already testing full multi-touch Macs, but the software requirements will likely lead to a launch timeframe of 2010.”

Apple first introduced multi-touch technology in their lineup when they released the iPhone. Shortly after its release Steve Jobs stated that multi-touch technology would make its way in other Apple products. We saw this technology in the iPod Touch. The MacBook Air was the first in the Mac lineup to receive the updated trackpad followed by the recently updated MacBook Pro.

A few years ago Apple acquired the company Fingerworks. Apple has the technology, and the founders Wayne Westerman and John Elias are now working for Apple. Fingerworks has done significant development into input multi-touch devices, one of them being the iGesture pad. Recently, we’ve seen Apple patents appear that focus on multi-touch technology. Apple spends a lot of money in research and development it will be interesting to see how soon we’ll see a Mac with these capabilities. Will launch a new line of computers that feature the multi-touch screen technology. Perhaps they’ll call it the MacBook Touch?
