Quake 3 for iPod Touch not to be made public
By Jonathan Schlaffer
After some videos of Quake 3 running on a couple of iPod Touch units surfaced earlier this week some began wondering when or if the game would be making its way for either official or unofficial download. It won’t, not soon and probably not ever.
The reason behind the port was the first step in a small developer to get its game developed for the iPod Touch. According to GameCyte, HermitWorks ported Quake 3 to the iPod Touch in "8 to 12" hours but it was only done so to see if the game engine would run on the iPod Touch. The engine used in Quake 3 is the same used in its game, Space Trader.
HermitWorks hopes to have Space Trader ready by June for the iTunes Store for users to purchase and download but in order for that to happen they would need minimal support in Apple’s official SDK which was late in coming.
Not that it needs it, the game works fine as is but official support would make it easier for consumers to get their hands on the game.
Space Trader is a FPS style game but the company is also working on a RPG game tenatively called Quest. Let’s hope they do manage official SDK support in time for the June release, I’d be sure to be one of the first to get the game.
